Why am I a big advocate for Rakuten (formerly Ebates) and Mr Rebates? Because you get money back for your purchases in online and in-store purchases, no matter what the payment is (either credit card or PayPal).
Treat them as marketing channels. Let say you want to buy a product from Macy's. Companies (in this case, Macy's) pay Rakuten or Mr Rebates a 'bounty' for advertising their companies in these websites. If you shop via these websites, Rakuten or Mr Rebates will then pass down some of the 'bounty' to you.
Below are the steps to earn cash back:
2. Click on the link or 'Shop Now' to activate the shopping trip.
3. A new window will pop-out. Make your purchase in this window within a reasonable time.
4. After making your purchase, you either get instant notification or email within 12-36 hours that the cash back will be recorded in your account.
5. Make sure to monitor your cash back activity. There are times when I have found that Rakuten often missed paying my transactions and I have to file missing claims.
6. You can either redeem your cash back via PayPal or via gift card where you may get additional bonus cash. Just don't forget to change your default payment choice.
Note that there are instances where you may not be able to earn cash back:
There are other cash back programs out there but instead of trying each one of them, I am satisfied with Rakuten or Mr Rebates. After 3-5 years of usage, I have earned about $1000 of cash back. Not too bad.
