$-$$ How to get free meals and experience

In the last 3 years, I probably attended more than 30 free events, ranging from menu tasting, archery, to photography class. At the same time, I can also make new friends and get some freebies. Can you guess how?

All it takes is to be a Yelp Elite member. There's no specific criteria on how to become one but a wise rule is to be active in the Yelp community. For example:

• Writing reviews periodically (doesn't have to be for restaurant)
• "Checking" into places
• Bookmarking new places
• Friending new people
• Complementing people's reviews
• Answering questions
• Uploading pictures

Then, you are either recognized by your Yelp local community manager or get referred by another Yelp Elite member. I got my status in 2017 from a referral even though I only had 40+ reviews.  Once you are an Elite member, you just need to look out for events and sign up for those that you are interested in. I have also heard of long-tenured folks (earning the "Black belt" status ) who were sent to Atlantic City for few days (all expenses paid for) and folks that were featured in TV show. You never know what opportunity it may bring you

Note that

• This Elite status is not guaranteed and you have to be active in order to have your status renewed each year. 
• You can attend to these events even if you are not a Yelp Elite members. However, the competition may be tougher as there are much more non-Yelp Elite members.
• Signing up for these events does not guarantee you a spot as the Yelp community manager will prioritize more active members. 

If I have to put a value for these events, it will vary between $10 to $75 (without tax, tips) as it depends on the event sponsor. On average, I'll say around $20-$30. For example, the menu below was from the fanciest Yelp event that I had been to as they provided 3-course fine dining experience with desserts and unlimited cocktail.

In most event, they often organize lottery or photo contest where participants can get prizes. So far, I've won prizes ranging from $10 to $75.
